- In the municipality of Vilches, where the Guadalimar and Guadalén rivers meet, Giribaile is an archaeological site of enormous importance.
- Its 18 hectares hold an Iberian city, a prehistoric sanctuary, an Early Christian or Visigothic monastery and an Almohad castle built after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.
- Above all, Giribaile stands out for holding the remains of the Iberian city of Orisia, razed by the Romans during the Second Punic War.
- From its height the visitor can also enjoy beautiful landscapes of mountains and olive groves embracing the waters of the reservoir.
More about this place…
Despite all a visitor can see today, Giribaile is a site still waiting to be uncovered. In recent years excavations have come in fits and starts, for lack of funding for an area that, incomprehensibly, has still not been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Included in the “Journey to the Time of the Iberians” programme, which the Jaén Provincial Council launched to showcase the province’s great Iberian heritage, Giribaile remains unfinished business for the society and the politicians of Jaén.
