- Built on top of the old medieval church of Santiago, the Hermitage-Sanctuary of the Virgen del Castillo dates from the 18th century.
- On the very top of the Castle hill, it offers lovely views over the whole town of Vilches.
- Vilches Castle stood on this hill; very little of it survives today, because the church of Santiago, and later the hermitage, were built on its parade ground.
- The hermitage houses the image of the patron saint of Vilches, who every 14 August is carried down in procession to the parish church of San Miguel for the festivities named after her.
More about this place…
From a spectacular position, the Hermitage of the Virgen del Castillo looks out over the whole municipality of Vilches. Standing on the parade ground of Vilches Castle, of which hardly anything remains, the hermitage was built in the 18th century on top of the old medieval church of Santiago. Every 14 August Vilches celebrates the feast of its patron saint, who leaves the hermitage and is carried down in procession to the parish church of San Miguel.
