- Right after the Christian reconquest, the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Villa was built in Martos.
- On a rocky hill, the Sanctuary was remodelled in the 16th century by the renowned architect Francisco del Castillo, when the bell tower was also built on a turret of the old wall that protected the town.
- After serious damage in the Civil War, the Sanctuary was completely rebuilt in the 1940s, leaving the bell tower as its only original part.
- The church houses the image of the Virgen de la Villa, perpetual mayor of Martos.
More about this place…
On a rocky hill, the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Villa can be clearly seen from a distance. The present church owes its Neo-Baroque style to the architect Andrés Pajares, who rebuilt it after the serious damage it suffered at the start of the Civil War. Above it all stands the bell tower, built on an old turret of the wall that protected the town of Martos; it is the only part that survives of the remodelling carried out by Francisco del Castillo in the 16th century.
