- At the entrance to Poyotello, a small, singular hamlet in the municipality of Santiago-Pontones, starts a path that leads steadily downhill to the Cueva del Agua.
- As we go down, the murmur of the still young Segura river grows louder as it runs through a spectacular canyon.
- In about 40 minutes we see the Cueva del Agua on our right, an enormous hollow whose walls ooze water all year round, forming a great pool on the floor.
- The karst process explains how water filters through the limestone from the highest parts of the mountain and “springs” again from the walls of the cave.

More about this place…
Poyotello is a small hamlet near Pontones where, besides its singular beauty and spectacular landscapes, the spectacular Cueva del Agua of the Segura river awaits us. In scientific terms this enormous hollow is a karst spring whose walls ooze the water filtered down from the upper parts of the mountain. Going inside, in the deepest part we can see the remains of a “cenajo”, a structure used to keep livestock under the shelter of caves or rock overhangs. From the Cueva del Agua we can carry on along the path, which always runs alongside the Segura until it reaches the hamlet of Huelga Utrera.
